Bathroom - cosmetics/extras:
- Hair dyes
Annie of Care2 has an article on salon hair dyes. Most dyes used for dying hair have not been tested for safety. High cancer rates are reported amongst many cosmetologists who work with a lot of hairdye, but this is only correlational. Read the FDA cosmetics “hair dye products” section to see what the FDA says.
- Logona Kosmetik's hair dyes at GreenMarketplace
Logona's products use natural colors (including organically grown henna) and are free from any synthetics. They are in fact tested to food standards in Europe for chemical content. They coat the outside of hair instead of altering (damaging) its natural structure. This does mean that they work best on lighter hair. These are short term (4 - 6 weeks) dyes. Natural colors (reds, browns, blacks, blondes). 3.5oz/$10.
- Lipstick
The average woman supposedly ingests 8 tubes worth of lipstick a year.
Frankly I find that hard to believe, but the point remains – if it's on your lips, you're going to swallow some, no matter what. It should be non-toxic, and ideally food grade. If you must wear lipstick, I mean.
There are a great many natural lipsticks on the market.

- Nail polish - Compare ingredients
Nail polish is one of my guilty pleasures – the only 'make-up' I've ever found appealing. Probably because it's brightly colored and shiney. I've read that there are no environmentally safe nail polishes/nail polish removers on the market. Some contain toluene (toxic) and formaldehyde (a known carcinogen), and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a hormone disrupter. However, all conventional nailpolishes use petroleum products – obviously problematic environmentally. A solution? Peel-off polishes. Water based, non-toxic, and semi permanent (last a day or so). Not necessarily natural.
- **Earthly Delights Peel-off nail polish at Mother Earth's Creations.
.33oz/$2.20.
They have some cool colors, including metallics, neon, glitter, scented, and glow-in-the-dark. Ingredients are listed (on Red Safari webpage) as: distilled water, ethylene glycol mono-butyl ether, n-methylpyrro-lidone, water based resin. May contain titanium dioxide, iron oxides, (a variety of coloring agents). Can also be bought at InterNatural.
How do they compare to conventional nailpolishes? Pretty favorably, IMO. They're thick – I only need one coat. They have very much the same appearance as conventional nail polishes. They peel off easily, but not supereasily easily. I can go about my life pretty normally without disturbing them (typing, vigorous hand washing, walking barefoot), but they do come off when I brush my tangled hair in the hot shower or just after some time has passed. I assume that since they sit on top of the nail, instead of penetrating the upper third of it like conventional polishes, they do less damage to the nail.
- Mad River Science's Nail A'Peel
A wider range of reds and pinks. $2.50/bottle, but they don't say what size bottles are, and don't list ingredients. Probably very similar to Earthly Delights though. Here's a brief but enthusiastic review. Here you can see some of them in the bottles.
- Mad River Science's Go Natural polish
Designed to be more permanent than peel-offs, but still non-toxic. A bottle of prep/remover is included with the polish. 16 colors, and they take color requests. $3.50/bottle, but they still don't give bottle size. Not tested on animals. Ingredients: water, water-miscible acrylic and polyurethane film formers and thickeners, glycol ethers (small variety of coloring agents).
- Natural Beauty Colors
Water based. The site says to use two coats and a gloss top coat. $4.50/bottle (size not given), $4 for top gloss coat, min order two bottles (one may be gloss top). Variety of colors (pink heavy), including frosted/pearlescent and glitter. Will do custom colors.
- Gigi Peelable nail coloring
